No matter who they are, everyone wants to increase their vitality, have an ideal state of physical health, and feel great every day. That could mean living a pain-free life, getting out to do your favorite activities, or simply feeling better than you ever have before. At The Better Energy Shop, the brainchild of Dr. Sylvia Skefich, we are dedicated to demonstrating why we are more than just a retail store for health tools. We strive to be a wellness resource center for each of our customers and patients. We offer nutritional remedies, doterra supplements, as well as “protocols” written by Dr. Skefich, herself, on how to use specific supplements to support your body through common complaints.

What Is CranioSacral Therapy (CST)?

If you have never heard of CranioSacral Therapy or are unsure of what type of therapeutic effects you will feel after a CranioSacral Therapy (CST) session, our team at The Better Energy Shop is here to help. Our team is fully invested in this system because we have seen its benefits and positive effects when patients take full advantage of the therapy.

For those unfamiliar with CranioSacral Therapy, here is a quick summary of what the therapy is, how it was discovered, and what patients can expect from their sessions. You will realize that it is unlike any other type of physical therapy.

In osteopathic college, William Garner Sutherland (1873-1954), discovered the CranioSacral mechanism. He became enthralled with the idea that the joints of the cranium resemble a machine that he would have been familiar with having had a background with printing press machinery. He developed CranioSacral manual therapies to address the restrictions in this CranioSacral membrane system.

Sutherland had entered osteopathic college as a second career. He had been a printer, and, given that, he was familiar with mechanisms of gearing and mechanical harmony. As he sat in the bone library at his college and studied the joints (called ‘sutures’) of the human skull, William could not believe that the cranial plates fused as a person develops, as his education was teaching him that they did.

There are 26 bones in the human head (cranium), and the joints are designed to allow for certain motions depending on their shape (e.g., tongue-in-groove, interlaced, or abutted). William Sutherland noticed that the joint above the ear looked like a fish gill and was shaped to be breathing as the cranium moved.

He documented how all 26 bones moved – speed, amplitude, and arcing pattern – and determined that manipulative and physiological therapeutics of this twelve-second pulse that every person has can help regain openness and normalcy to any stuck spots in the body. This was the beginning of CranioSacral therapy (CST) and cranial osteopathic manipulative medicine.

How Does a CST Session Affect the Brain and Spinal Cord?

During a CranioSacral therapy (CST) session, the practitioner will make light contact at certain points around the head, spine, torso, knees, feet, arms or hands, potentially. With the specific angles and depths of pressure applied at these points, the CranioSacral therapy expert will note how the body reacts in the membrane system.

These reactions will determine any restrictions in the CranioSacral system which consists of the membranes that run throughout the muscular and nervous systems, and in the cerebrospinal fluid surrounding the brain. The ultimate goal of CranioSacral therapy (CST) is to eliminate the restrictions in the CranioSacral system and to improve the function of the central nervous system.

Benefits of CranioSacral Therapy to the Central Nervous System

There are various exceptional benefits of CranioSacral Therapy for the patients who embrace it. A CST session can be used alone or in conjunction with other treatments for conditions such as migraines, chronic fatigue syndrome, trauma, chronic neck pain, side effects from cancer treatments, TMJ, chronic pain, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), traumatic brain injury, and other issues.

Some of the most common benefits of a CranioSacral Therapy (CST) session include:

  • Relieving pain
  • Relieving tension
  • Promoting a feeling of well-being
  • Boosting health and immunity
  • Improving biological processes by boosting inherent self-regulation, and self-correction

If you are suffering from any kind of chronic pain that may have been caused by tension in the central nervous system, you may be a patient who can greatly benefit from the use of CranioSacral Therapy performed by our experts at The Better Energy Shop in Santa Cruz, California.
